What Is Green Card?

The Green Card or a permanent resident card is a document that indicates a person’s permanent residency in the United States. The USCIS issues the Green Card to every permanent resident of the country as proof of their right to live and work in the U.S. There are many ways in which you can become a permanent resident in the U.S. While a family member or an employer can be the sponsor, one may also become a permanent resident via refugee, asylum status, and other humanitarian programs. Hence based on the application criteria, the Green Cards may vary as well.

No green card doesn’t make you a citizen though one can stay forever in the country. Citizenship comes with additional rights related to access to benefits to government schemes, the right to vote etc. One can apply for Citizenship on the basis of having a Green Card for 3-5 years, depending on how you got your Green Card.

Technically speaking, one can stay forever with their Green card if the same is renewed every 10 years.

One does not need to be in the United States to apply for a Green Card.

There are different categories based on specific criteria on which a person becomes eligible to file for a Green application, like through family, employment, special immigrant status, etc. If the person meets the eligibility criteria, they can file Form I-485 – Application to Register Permanent Residence or Adjust Status to file for Green Card. Based on a review by USCIS, a green card is issued, the card will be valid for ten years and needs to be renewed after that, but the permanent residence status never expires, you can be a permanent resident for the rest of your life.
