What Is Travel Visa?

A Travel Visa is a document that allows foreign nationals to visit (not permanently reside) the United States. The USCIS issues different forms of travel visas to foreign individuals based on their purpose of visit. A travel visa permits a nonimmigrant foreign national to temporarily stay in the United States for business purposes (B-1), tourism (B-2), or a mix of both. Here are some of the different travel visa types that are issued by USCIS

Who can apply for a travel visa?

Any foreign national with a valid passport entering the US for a shorter period of stay for vacation, medical treatment, business etc., can apply for a US travel visa. Plus, there are scenarios of transit for which the visa is applicable. For application, one needs certain documents

  • Valid passport for at least six months beyond your stay in the U.S. (unless exempt by country-specific agreements).
  • Confirmation page for the Form DS-160 Nonimmigrant Visa Application form
  • Receipt of any application fees deposited before the interview

In some cases, additional information may be needed to determine your eligibility while applying for a travel visa. This may include –

  • Specifying the purpose of your journey
  • Intention to leave the United States at the end of your travel, or
  • Ability to cover all of the trip’s expenses

The aim of your journey and your intent to return to your native country may be demonstrated by evidence of your employment and/or family links. If you are unable to fund all of your trip’s expenditures, you may present proof that another individual will cover the same for you.

How to apply for a US travel visa?

While the visa application process varies based on the U.S. Embassy or Consulate, you must –

  • Read the instructions in the visa application form
  • Complete and submit the Form DS-160
  • Upload your digital photograph
  • Schedule an Interview at the U.S. Embassy or Consulate

In the visa application process, there are certain matters that you should know in advance –

  • At your interview, you’ll need to bring a receipt for fees paid and the confirmation page for DS-160.
  • Ink-free digital fingerprint scans are also taken as part of the procedure. While they are most likely to be taken during the interview, this is not always the case.
  • In some cases, the consular officer may conclude that your application requires additional administrative processing after your visa interview.
  • Following the approval of your visa, you may be required to pay a visa issuance fee (if applicable).

How can we help with your travel visa?

A visa does not ensure entry to the States. The U.S. Customs, Border Protection (CBP) officials, and Department of Homeland Security (DHS) at the port-of-entry possess the authority to enter, permit or deny admission to the States. Hence, professional advice in such cases is quite helpful.
This is where an immigration attorney can help you streamline the complexities around the travel visa application process. The Law Offices of Prashanthi Reddy, PLLC, an NYC-based immigration law practice, has assisted many clients in their travel visa applications. As a result, our attorneys are well versed in cases that the USCIS authorizes.
