If you do not go to the consulate for a H-1b visa you will be able to reenter only on your existing H-4 visa in your passport, you will then have to apply once again for a COS to H-1.
I am having h4 visa stamped on passport till valid Feb 2025.I am planning to convert to h1b with change of status application in next month. after conversion if i need to travel to mexico/canada and re-enter with valid H1B i797 without going through visa stamping, would that be a problem and if not what status would they give me on i94( H4 or H1?)?
